Cars are NOT Babysitters

Wednesday July 9, 2003
It happens every summer; young children are tragically left in sweltering vehicles and die. Two more young boys, aged 3 and 5, died yesterday in Lancaster, Ca in their foster mother's SUV. Sheriff Lee Baca put it best when he said Vehicles are not playpens. Vehicles are not baby sitters. And vehicles, when they are not properly ventilated, are death traps. From CNN: Young boys die in sweltering SUV

Never leave your children alone in your car, even for just a few minutes. According to Lynn Johnson, About.com's Guide to Parenting of Babies and Toddlers, Many parents mistakenly think they can leave a child in a vehicle while running a "quick" errand. Unfortunately a delay of just a few minutes can lead to tragedy. Heat is much more dangerous to children than it is to adults. When left in a hot vehicle, a young child's core body temperature can increase three to five times faster than that of an adult causing permanent injury or death. Please, don't let this happen to your children!
