Baking Soda Tip

Wednesday June 23, 2004
Suz sent in this baking soda tip:
"Since Mom's Alzheimer's is interfering with her normal grooming routine, getting her hair washed is like pulling a dragon through quicksand. Recently my mother's hairdresser, Mary, showed me a wonderful "trick": slightly dampen a handfull of baking soda and apply this directly to the wet hair and scalp. This pre-rinse does 2 things: gives a refreshing sensation to the scalp and gently removes the oils and build-up without harming dry hair. Mary explained that aging skin and hair are extremely dry. Using a vinegar rinse on an elderly person's hair actually dries it out more. Using a pre-rinse of baking soda followed by a loving shampoo and then conditioner is the best way to wash an elderly person's hair. - - - The refreashing sensation has actually made my mother willing (miracle) to have her hair washed!"
