Stay-at-Home Parents Websites

Focus on Personal Homepages

From About.com

If you have been exploring the Web for any length of time, you have surely come across many personal homepages. Well, this week I want to highlight some of the great homepages created by real stay-at-home parents. I have selected two sites made by stay-at-home moms. These two homepages are very different, but each is wonderful in it's own special way. I hope you enjoy these sites as much as I do.

Jill's Little World
created by Jill (Stay-at-Home Mother of 3)

As soon as you enter this homepage, you will discover that Jill has a great sense of humor! Her "Reports from the Battlefield" are very funny stories all parents will relate to. Make sure you read "Home Depot Will Never Be The Same (or When ya gotta go... ya gotta go!) Hint: it has to do with those display toilets...a hilarious story!
Jill also has the obligatory pictures of her kids, or kidlets as she calls them. But she livens these up with her humor, too. Make sure you read her "interview" with her youngest son, Kell David.
Jill has some good advice for parents. For example, in her "THINGS ADULTS LEARN FROM KIDS" page, you will find such wisdom as "When you hear the toilet flush and the words "Uh-oh," it's already too late.", or "Legos will pass through the digestive tract of a four year old. Duplos will not."
Jill offers something all parents need: a little humor in our lives. She reminds us we all need to step back and laugh at ourselves and our kids now and then!

Mother Bear's Home Page
created by Debbie (Stay-at-Home Mother of 4 "cubs")

Debbie has such a charming theme for her homepage and she successfully carries the theme throughout her site. For example, she has the "Kids Honey Jar" with links to kids sites, and "Mother Bears Den" where you will find craft ideas as well as some links to parenting sites.
Debbie also has some of her own recipes, which she plans to add to weekly, found in "The Picnic Basket". The Taco Potatoes sound easy and delicious!
One of my favorite pages on Debbie's site is "A Parent's Prayer". Next time you are feeling stressed-out as a parent, read this. It will help!

Criteria
What makes a great homepage? Well, it's certainly subjective. But here are the major factors that led me to choose these following sites:

  • Readable
This might sound like an obvious criterion, but it's truly amazing the number of personal homepages out there that I can't read because of the wrong background. A dark purple background with black type definitely does not work!
  • Personality
I like homepages that let the author's personality shine through. After you visit these following sites, you will feel like you know something about the authors, their likes and dislikes, philosophy on parenting and life in general.
  • Originality
I wanted sites that had some original material, whether is was humorous stories, recipes, or original graphics. Not just a list of links...and speaking of links:
  • Links
Links are great and useful, but a short description of the site being linked to is nice.
