Before You Buy Kitchen Gadgets

From About.com

Sometimes it's fun to try some slightly unusual kitchen gadgets. These items can also make nice gifts for the cook who has everything else in their kitchen already. While you might use some of these items more often than others, all can come in handy at times. Before you buy a product though, make sure it doesn't end up collecting dust in a dark corner of your cupboard.

Ease of Cleanup

Ease of cleanup is an important consideration before purchasing a kitchen gadget; if the gadget is hard to clean, chances are you won't use it often. Look for non-stick surfaces and parts that are easily dissembled for easy washing. Also, think about the size of the gadget; will it easily fit in your sink?

Storage

Most of us don't have a lot of extra countertop room to store appliances, so storage is another factor to consider before buying a kitchen gadget. Look for gadgets that either come apart for compact storage or will fit easily in your cupboards or pantry.

Usefulness

While this is harder to assess before actually purchasing a kitchen gadget, try to think about how useful the product will be to you and your family. If the gadget only has one limited use, chances are it will collect dust in the back of your cupboard.

Quality

If you do plan on buying an off-brand gadget, make sure you carefully inspect the quality of construction before buying. Make sure the product is sturdy, with no flimsy, plastic parts to break after one or two uses. Sometimes buying a name-brand kitchen gadget is the safest route to take.
