Baking soda is an inexpensive and natural product that has many uses around the house in addition to baking. From deodorizing your refrigerator to smothering grease fires, baking soda does a little bit of everything.

In past articles, I asked readers to submit their tips using baking soda. I received a tremendous amount of great hints and tips; thanks to everyone who submitted.

Reader's Tips:

  • For sinus infection. Use a dash of salt and a dash of soda in 1 tablespoon of water. Snort every night if allergies are constant. Hard to do at first but after a week, infections go down drastically and no more sinus breath due to infection. - Candy
(IMPORTANT: Before using baking soda for any medical purposes, please consult your doctor.)

  • If you have hard water in your home, use two or three teaspoons of baking soda to optimize your detergents sudsing and cleaning power. It gets off hard water stains on chrome, keeps bubbles in the water longer, cuts through grease. Use a 1/2 cup in a load of laundry and it really helps your detergent do its job. Great when you need to bleach your whites too. - Angela

  • I use it for beans (for people who suffer from colon or gases), you just put 1-2tsp for 1/2kg. of beans soaked in water to get rid of the carbon dioxide. - Kathy

  • Use baking soda to clean the chrome on older cars. Make a thin paste of baking soda; work it on to the chrome (especially over scratched and rusty spots); leave to dry; rinse off with hot water; polish with a soft cloth. - Susan

  • Baking soda is great for keeping drains clog free! Just dump about 3 to 4 tablespoons down the drain and pour about a cup or so of vinegar and watch the foam! Leave for about 15 minutes then run hot water. Drains stay clog free and smell great. Also good for old pipes. - Tonya

  • Whenever I have had a night out with my friends I always wash my clothes with a scoop of baking soda! That way I smell good the whole next day! - Michelle
