Simple Money Saving Tips

"I'm disgusted by how much money we spend at the grocery store. Lately, we have been spending $100 - $125 (this does NOT include formula and diapers) a week. And I have no idea what we are getting for our money.

Even during the best of times it can be difficult trying to make ends meet on one income. Saving a few cents here and there can make a big difference at the end of the month. In previous articles, our readers shared their frugal tips. This week, I would like to share a few more tips that parents have submitted. Thanks to everyone who has sent in their frugal hints!

From Yvonne:
Just one of the many things that has been a pet peeve of mine is SOS pads. What I now do is cut the SOS pads in half, that way if you only get to use them twice it is not so much of a waste. I find if you use them whole, the soap gets wasted.
From Guy:
Never buy a new car - you're only paying the salesman's commission and the price drops as soon as you drive out of the showroom. If you must have a "shiny car" look for deals on demonstrator models or nearly-new cars!
From Jenna:
I have four children, so when I go to the grocery store there are a lot of sacks, and we always asks for paper, because they hold more. Then we use them for all sorts of things from crafting all the way down to lining the flower bed (yes the flower bed). Putting them down before you put mulch it keeps the weeds at bay and it will decompose so you are environmentally wise.
From Tracy:
A few years ago our dryer broke down, so rather than spending money we didn't have repairing it, I bought two clothes horses. And then with each child that joined our family I added another one! I now have four clothes horses and in winter I dry most of my clothes on them over a heater duct, in front of a warm sunny window. Within 24 hours the clothes are all dry. We have since replaced our dryer with a new one and I sort the laundry so that underwear and dryer-friendly clothes go in one load and the rest of the clothes dry over the heater. I also save time and money on ironing. It is a task I don't enjoy, so when we take clothes off the line outside we fold them as we go and shorts, T-shirts and jeans all go straight into drawers. I only iron business shirts and dresses now.
From Sylvia:
I like post-it yellow pads for my notes and lesson plans because they´re practical and I can change places frequently if necessary But I find them expensive so I cut slips of the sheets and glue sheets of other kinds of (cheapest) paper on them and write or type whatever I need to.
I want to thank everyone for their tips and hints, and please keep them coming!
