Making the Grade

This week I will discuss more educational shareware and freeware to help your kids "make the grade" in school.

Math Phobia, a fear and dislike of mathematics, seems to be more common these days than ever. If your child is having difficulty with math, you may want to download some of the following math games that at least try to make math fun.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Before downloading any program from the Web, I would highly recommend that you first download a virus protection program, such as McAffee's.

Math Rescue: Episode 1

Requirements:XT Computer (286 or higher recommended)
475k of conventional memory
1.4 meg of Hard Drive Space (for shareware)

Description: This shareware game is a follow-up to Word Rescue, which I described in last week's feature article. This time the Gruzzles are taking all the numbers and it's up to your child to get them back. This arcade-style game teaches the basic math facts of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Entertainment Value:

Comments: My kids didn't seem to enjoy this program as much as Word Rescue; maybe because the game-play is more difficult in Math Rescue. There are several levels included with the shareware version, however, and the game does a good job teaching the basic math skills.

Dino Match 4.0, Memory-building game

Requirements: Windows 3.1x
File Size: 583619 bytes

Description: This is a cute program for younger kids, especially kids who love dinosaurs. Basically, your kids will match number cards and play a simple board game with the help of a dinosaur.

Entertainment Value:

Comments: My four-year old enjoyed this game, and it kept his interest for about an hour. It's pretty basic, however, and your child will probably master the game very quickly.

Living Numbers

Requirements: Windows Win3.1X
Compressed Size: 1,134,894 bytes

Description: This is an extremely cute program for preschool-aged children. It teaches number recognition and counting skills. The program includes a counting game, dot-to-dot, and Mr. Number Head (similar to Mr.Potato Head, but with numbers).

Educational Value:
Entertainment Value:

Comments: This is a trial version of the program, and gives a sampling of what the registered version includes. The graphics and sounds are very well done, and I would highly recommend this program.
