(Note: I do not necessarily endorse this home-based business. Before starting any business, it is best to do a lot of research and contact others who are involved with the business. Eva Resnikova at evaresni@worldnet.att.net.)
When I saw the DK logo in a small ad in our local parents' paper, I was
curious. I called the number and made an appointment to meet with Lynne.
It didn't take much to persuade me to become a distributor. I already
loved the books. I certainly believed in the company's mission of making
the home a center of learning. And I was very attracted to the
flexibility inherent in owning my own business. I was also impressed
with the quality of the sales aids and training materials, which were as
clearly written and beautifully designed as the books. And, as if I
needed any further convincing, P.B. Bear was on the cover of the
catalog!
Lynne was great. She helped me launch my business with a "book look."
She was always available to answer my questions, give me suggestions,
and provide support. We often shared fairs and conferences, combining
our resources and dividing up the leads.
Selling DK products was even easier than I had imagined. The Dorling
Kindersley name was already well known to teachers, librarians, and many
parents, so making the initial contact was never a problem. Then I got
to tell them they could purchase DK books and CD-ROMs at sizable
discounts, and that I could offer them exclusive products that were not
available in stores. Our "we-do-all-the-work" book fairs were a big hit
with schools and childcare centers whose parent volunteers were maxed
out.
I was doing so well in my personal sales that at first I didn't
recognize the value of sponsoring. Then I attended a Future Network
Coordinators meeting with Janet Daniels, our incredible vice president
of sales. Not only was her enthusiasm contagious, but she showed us in
black-and-white how much more quickly we could reach our goals by
sponsoring and training others to do what we were doing.
It wasn't long after I began sponsoring that I achieved Network
Coordinator status. I also discovered that I got great personal
satisfaction from sharing the DK Family Learning opportunity with
others, especially women who needed to work but wanted to stay home with
their children. I feel I've made a real difference in the lives of these
women and their families.
I know I've made a difference in the lives of the countless children who
will encounter these wonderful books in their homes, at school, and in
libraries, and who just might develop a lifelong love of reading after
an encounter with P.B. Bear and his friends.
DK Family Learning
Before I had even heard of DK Family Learning, my son had acquired a
shelf full of Dorling Kindersley books. Alexander especially loved the
books about P.B. Bear and his friends, who are adorable stuffed animals.
I think he liked the fact that the illustrations were photographs rather
than drawings, and the rebus format made him feel that he was "reading"
along with me. I wouldn't go so far as to say that P.B. Bear taught
Alexander to read, but he did become an early and enthusiastic reader
who is now, at age seven, devouring DK information books on every
subject imaginable.
