Your Frugal Tips
From our Readers: Page 10

Here are some frugal tips that other stay-at-home parents have shared with us.

From Aubra:
You won't always be able to make something cheaper but most of the time you can do a better job than the stores do. Shop the sales, check out the discard bins, and the value priced fabric. Plus you don't need to match thread to every fabric, white, off-white, black and dark blue will be fine to start off with.

From Martha:
I have 3 kids 5,3,and 1 yrs.. We too are a one income family about 3 yrs ago a friend taught me how to can. I havent bought jam , canned fruit or canned beans since that time. It is a lot of work, but you can do it with a friend and share split the batch. There are a lot of helpful books to help you get started in the canning section of your supermarket. If you don't have a garden etc.. of your own or have another good source of attaining fruits or veggies at a good price wait till the particular item you want is on sale and buy in bulk. My family doesnt even care for store bought jams anymore. Homemade is cost efficient and so yummy!

From Karen:
Eliminate milk from your childrens diet. Science has proven in study after study that cows milk is harmful to children. The calcium is not effective because of the high protein content and the hormones are harmful. Milk is expensive and is not good for you. Check it out. www.notmilk.com
[NOTE: You should check with your pediatrician before elimination milk from children's diets.]

From Jill:
Once when my teen aged daughter was doing the dishes, she forgot to add soap to the dishwasher. When the dishes were done, they were clean but did not smell fresh. Ever since then I only add one Tablespoon or so to the soap dispenser. It took us over a year to use a 7 pound tub we bought at the Warehouse store.

From Sarah:
One way to save money and to save and freeze all your leftover. I use small containers for leftover vegetables and meat. I use them to make soups, pot pies, stews and stir fries. I think you will amazed at how quickly the food adds up and this is food most people throw away.

I want to thank everyone for their tips and hints, and please keep them coming!
