Your Frugal Tips
From our Readers: Page 12

Here are some frugal tips that other stay-at-home parents have shared with us.

From Christina:
Always double up! I shop at the local Co-op grocery store I found out after checking that I can combine manufacturer coupons with store sales. Also I get coupons for money off groceries when I buy gas there, and the gas costs the same as all other local gas stations. At the end of the year I get a membership rebate based on what I spent, and sales tax rebate. I also buy insurance from a company that gives me discounts for buying all my insurance through them, I get car and life for the same cost as I was previously paying for car only, and I have more coverage.

From Novella:
I make my own baby wipes out of paper towel. You need to buy Bounty Big Roll and cut it in half. Than you get a #9 Rubbermaid container and put in it, 2 1/4 cups warm water, 2 T baby oil & 2 T baby wash. Mix that together in container, than add the half roll of paper towel till it is soaked thru, you will need to flip it once. Than when it is all the way wet, pull out the cardboard center. These are excellant for diaper changes and for cleaning of little hands. You save the other half of the roll for the next use. It is a lot cheaper to do this, than to buy the other wipes and better for the skin too.

From Jo:
I buy meat in bulk at Costco (a warehouse type store). I repackage the meat to feed a family of three. When my step-kids are here, I use two packages. I buy a large pork roast and cut it up in three or four sections and use cotton string to tie each section a little more securely. After we have a roast, we usually have left overs. I take the left over pork, cut in in cubes and make a large batch of chili to have one night and freeze the rest. I also make spaghettie sauce about every month or so and freeze it in containers. We get about 9 meals from one batch of sauce and you are not limited to just have it with spaghettie noodles, there is Lasagne, chicken parmesan, etc. It is a very quick meal too for those days when you are running behind.

From Lisa:
I have a four month-old boy and a 13 year old girl, so there are absolutely no hand-me-downs in this family. Got rid of my daughter's clothes years ago. I find I save a ton of money for my son's clothes by shopping consignment. If you pick your store right, the articles are almost like new. Our son can wear brand name (not that I care, mind you) for about 1/2 of what it would cost to shop at the actual stores (sorry Baby Gap & Roots).

For $100, I got enough clothes for the winter for him and if you time it right, the consignment shops have season-end sales and take half off again so you can shop for next summer!

From Dana:
When grocery shop at store which doubles coupons - vons does everyday- you can also join whats called the Von's Club-- this card gives you extra discounts on all types of products and when possible you may have a coupon for a Club sale item this increases your discount...Check for baby product discounts too. For example at Von's for every $100 I spend on baby products they send me a $5 certificate to be used on any future purchases. These types of stores are always have something special going on...I like Nancy can now put top line meat on the table and majority of it I purchase is on sale - I have 3 children the oldest 3 in October - I have to be frugal.

I want to thank everyone for their tips and hints, and please keep them coming!
