Your Frugal Tips
From our Readers: Page 17

Here are some frugal tips that other stay-at-home parents have shared with us.

From Linda:
Use ordinary wooden CLOTHES PINS as closures for many items such as chips, freezer items, etc. Keep them handy in a kitchen drawer. You will be surprised how many uses they have!

From Laura:
In addition to the Von's coupon tips above, try to buy only the "loss leader" specials-- those big sales advertised in the newspaper ad. Buy lots of it and freeze or store for the future. My nine children enjoy great meals all the time and my husband is an economist. Big families (and small) can take great advantage of trying to ONLY buy advertised major sale items. At Vons it seems varied enough to make that the best place to save time and money.

From Lee:
When my children were small and we ate out at restaurants on vacation or whatever, I used to fasten their napkin as a bib using a simple old fashion mitten clip that I kept in my purse. After the meal, there was no messy bib to take home, and the napkins covered them nicely.

From Joan:
I was raised by parents who were children in the Depression. Being frugal is a way of life for me.

I have a 20 month old son and we are expecting a little girl in 6 weeks. I am a "Domestic Tyrant"

Instead of using a maternity bra for nursing, I used an old sports bra and just lifted up the bottom of it for nursing. It provided excellent support with no cumbersome latches.

When I buy a box of dryer sheets from the store, I cut them all in half. When I use a half sheet, I tear that in half and put the two quarters in the dryer in different areas.

I live on a well and septic, and whenever my son does not finish his yogurt or it goes bad before eaten (due to finicky eating habits) I put the yougurt down the toilet and flush. The bacteria in yogurt helps out in the septic system.

If you ever have a repair man come to your house for something, if he is self employeed, ask if there is a discount for cash. Most times you will receive a discount. Make sure you have the cash handy.

From Joanne:
An inexpensive outing for the family. Take the kids to Burger King to play in the big playcentre. The drink refills are free and you can also join the kids up to the Burger King club where they get free monthly treats plus a great treat bag at initial sign up. Just be sure to feed them before you go there so that your only output is a couple of drinks. It is much cheaper then one of those high priced indoor playgrounds and also your ear drums dont suffer quite so much!!!!

I want to thank everyone for their tips and hints, and please keep them coming!
