Your Frugal Tips
From our Readers: Page 24

Here are some frugal tips that other stay-at-home parents have shared with us.

From Wendy:
I saw on a cooking show that with some lettuces, such as iceberg, tearing the lettuce as opposed to cutting it will help prevent browning around the edges. Also, many years ago I worked for a fast food chain. They kept their lettuce (once cut or torn) in a container of water in the refrigerator. I do it and it seems to extend its life and keep it from drying out.
From Mindy:
Baking soda in cool water works great for the itching fire ant bites bring. Just soak for 10-15 minutes twice a day. It works even better and longer than Benadryl topical ointment.
From Susan:
Here is a great tip for anyone that has children, especially the ones that are still on sippie cups. Whenever we go out to eat, whether at a restaurant or a fast food restaurant, I bring my daughter's sippie cup and fill it either with what my husband or I are drinking especially if we get free refills. It is even better when you go to places that have the drink machine out for you to refill at your convenience.

Also another way to make baby clothes bigger or longer I should say. One way is say if you have a onesie or another piece of clothing that might been stained in one area - you can cut strips of the damaged clothing and add snaps to it and you have extended the length or size of the baby clothes. You can also buy fabric that is the same color or matches. This works because the "extender" is not noticeable because it is between the children's legs.

From Kim:
On a response to using contact paper to cover worksheets. The regular markers, even Sharpee permanent pens do work great, and if you have spray carb cleaner, or brake cleaner it will remove generally most residue also. Just use outside the stuff is strong and stinks if used outside your house does not stink of cleaner. Try different brands until you find one that you think works best. Get the regular stuff, not the non-chlorinated. Generally a terry towel in combo removes all. Spray a small area and wipe one area at a time before it can evaporate.
From Georgia:
One of my biggest savers is freebie shopping on the internet. I've gotten everything from free baby stuff (I've just become a grandmother) to stocking stuffers for Christmas, free seeds, baseball caps, soap, lotion, etc. Besides, it makes it fun to get the mail, you never know what is going to be there. I subscribe to a couple freebie e-zines. I have 4 children, two at home, and we live on one income.
From Angie:
With a one-income family, we have learned to look for the bargains. We have found that we can check out video's from our local library for free! Our library does not charge a rental fee for videos. Check out your local library.
I want to thank everyone for their tips and hints, and please keep them coming!
