At-home Parents of Ab

Not surprisingly, many of the Guides here at About.com are stay-at-home/work-at-home parents. Meet five of our fellow at-home parents, and please stop-by and visit their sites.

I've been a WAHM since the birth of my daughter Julia in late 1997! It's
been wonderful being able to work out of the house. I'm a PR consultant
and writer, and I've written humor books and books about
thyroid disease. I can't
imagine not having been here for Julia's first word, her first crawl,
her first step...and I can't imagine what life would be like if I had to
be up, dressed in business attire, and commuting back and forth to an
office, so I consider myself incredibly fortunate to be able to work at
home!
Shari Waters, About.com Guide to Music for Teens and Greenville, SC
- Hi, I'm Shari Waters and I am the About.com Guide to Music for Teens and
Greenville, South Carolina. I have three boys and finally became a
work-at-home mother in May of 1999. It is wonderful to have the opportunity
to do something I enjoy, be at home for my children, and still feel like
I'm contributing to the household. I just wish I could have done this a
long time ago!
Beverly Hernandez, About.com Guide to Homeschooling
- My name is Beverly Hernandez and I am the About.com Guide to Homeschooling. I became the Guide in June of 1999. I am the mother of 3 children, ages 19, 16, 13, the mother-in-law to 1 and the grandmother to Timothy, age 7 months. I have homeschooled all my children since the beginning, we're on our 15th year. The best part of staying home and homeschooling is the closeness that we've been able to maintain as a family. I love homeschooling and I love being a Guide to my favorite topic!
Rod Powers, About.com Guide to U.S. Military
- Hello, my name is Rod Powers, and I'm the Guide for About.com's U.S. Military Site. Although I could have stayed in the military for an additional seven years, I elected to retire at 23 years so that I could stay at home with my twin, 17 year-old daughters, Christina and Jeanie. As a single parent, I realized that my girls would need more support and supervision than I would be able to give as a full-time member of the military. Now, in addition to my About.com Web Site, I spend my time as a dedicated "sports-daddy." Both girls are extremely active in high school sports, and I'm their number-one fan!
Jody Miller , About.com Mexico & Central America for Visitors.
- I'm Jody Miller, the mother of 1 child - a boy, age 14. I've been the Guide to Mexico & Central America for Visitors since January 1999. I have also been a "home parent" for almost three years. Out of my home office, I do programming, training, and software support for the tour and travel industry, along with web design. Working in a 'virtual office' with three other people in various locations in the U.S. and Canada makes it interesting -- we have to communicate effectively, utilizing email and other technologies. My clients include about 90 companies in North America, and I am able to do programming, training, and support directly on their computers by using various software applications.
It's a strong benefit for me to be here when my son gets home from school, and especially during school breaks/vacations. With my technical skills, I am able to earn almost as much as I would working in an office building, without having to face traffic and lengthy driving times, no expenses for business attire (except those times when I must travel to another city in North America), and am able to set my own working hours. The only downside is that I have to work to make the personal contacts that I normally would make in an office setting, to ensure I am known by my 'peers'. But I wouldn't trade being a home parent for anything!
