Not surprisingly, many of the Guides here at About.com are stay-at-home/work-at-home parents. Meet five of our fellow at-home parents, and please stop-by and visit their sites.
Lynn M. Johnson, About.Com Guide to Parenting: Babies and Toddlers and Lexington, KY
I've been working from home since 1997. I have three children, a 4 year old
and 9 year old at home, and an 18 year old who has moved on to bigger and
better things. :-) I love working at home and only wish I'd had the option when
my two oldest boys were young. Just having some comradery with other
parents would have made my days at home with them a bit more interesting,
and maybe even easier. Frankly, I don't think I would want to work any other
way. To be able to help support my family and be always close-at-hand for
my children has proven to be an ideal arrangement for us.
I've always been a stay at home mom at heart. Unfortunately I've been
forced to work a number of part time jobs since my children were born. My
husband and I worked very odd schedules in order to ensure that our
children were always with one parent when the other was working. A little
over a year ago we moved from Ohio to Florida and due to circumstances I
was able to not take an outside job and just concentrate on my About.com
site. Since then life has been wonderful.
I have two children, my daughter Nicole is 9 and my son Daniel is almost 7.
They're both at the ages where they're very into outside activities. So
since my time is no longer taken up with going to an office each day, I'm
able to play chauffeur and drive them to their various activities. I've
also gotten to spend more time with them, and less time that I'm stressed
from working all day and coming home to another full time job. Now I just
work around their schedules and life runs very smoothly.
Even before my first child was born, I knew that I wanted to be a
stay-at-home mother, which I have been since Bevin Drake entered the world
in December of 1997. I was thrilled about the opportunity to directly
oversee his daily care while still feeling I was contributing something to
the work force and the world by becoming the About.com Guide to Oklahoma
City in February of 1999. Although my son isn't allowed to "help" me on the
computer, it is very enjoyable to be out and about with him in our
community -- we visit area attractions, libraries, parks, restaurants,
stores, and more, which enrich our lives and help me to find material to
research and write about at the same time! I think that our experiences
enable me to bring a personal family perspective to life in my community.
Bevin will have a new brother or sister in February of 2000, and I am
looking forward to having one of Oklahoma's City's newest citizens!
A veteran retailer with over 20 years experience, I specialize
in retail information technology and store operations. I am also
an ex-retail "gypsy" who was always willing to move for career
advancement before I became a mom in late 1996.
I love retail, but I love being my son's mom best of all. Instead
of being an IT director, now I am a work-at-home mom. After
leaving the corporate world in January 1999, I started a retail
consulting business. I have the joy of being there for my three
year old son, who is the light of my husband's and my lives.
There is no greater challenge or bigger reward than finding
work that you love and raising a loving family at the same time.
I'm Kimberly Hohman, the About.com guide to Race Relations. I've been
fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to be an at-home parent since I
gave birth to my oldest son in 1995. In addition to About.com, I do some
freelance writing from my home. I love the freedom of being able to earn
some extra income for our family while doing what I love to do best: being
a mom.
