It's hard to say when it actually began, because my husband and I have been
looking for ways to earn a living, while staying at home with our children,
for many years. We've tried a few MLM programs, without success (it's just
not for us) and have thought of several possible home businesses. I
started staying at home with our second pregnancy, partly because of my
health and partly because we could not afford to pay for childcare for 2,
even with a second income. After our son's birth, I became increasingly
aware of my desire to have "something to call my own". I love being with
my kids, but I hate asking
Brian for money.
As we neared the baby's first birthday, I hit upon an idea. I loved
working on the computer and am a skilled graphic design artist, so I
started CustomCreations. It went along fairly well, but I wanted it to
grow faster, so I decided to teach myself how to design webpages. Brian
and I started brainstorming theme ideas and came up with the idea of doing
a site on alternative health care. Alternative medicine has been my hobby
for quite sometime and I felt confident that I could find the necessary
resources to publish reliable information. What we found was a wealth of
information, too much for any one person to successfully wade through. As
I worked to create a professional site, it became increasingly obvious that
what was needed was a service to help people find the answers they were
looking for. The other key ingredient that was needed was an information
site that people could trust enough to turn to when looking for good
products. So we created a HealthMarket area within the site to showcase
products which we found to be of exceptional quality and value. Our
website went live in February 1998. We have received great response, in
spite of some technical glitches. We started with just Over The Shoulder
Baby Holder (we started carrying our son in one when he was 2 weeks old and
love it). It is still our biggest seller. We currently feature 5 product
lines: OTSBH, Simply Delicious Nursingwear, bulk & custom-encapsulated
herbs, Liquid Herbs (our own private label herbal tinctures) and Lansinoh.
We will soon be adding a line of homeopathic medicines and vitamins &
minerals.
Our site earns a profit from the products we sell. The information we
provide, including the research services are absolutely free. We want to
earn our visitors trust first and their business second, so we encourage
you to ask questions. It is exciting to watch our site grow and change.

Although currently, I am the only one working at home, this story isn't
complete without including my husband. It was his "entrepreneurial spirit"
that awakened my own desire to "be my own boss". We now co-own and operate
