French Apple Pie

  • 1 9-inch pie crust
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • dash of salt
  • 8 cups peeled, cored, and thinly sliced apples (About 8 medium apples; Granny Smith apples work well.)
Mix apples with remaining ingredients; turn into an unbaked pie shell. (I used a pre-made shell.)

Topping:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cube (1/2 cup) firm margarine
Mix until crumbly. Sprinkle over pie. Bake at 425 degrees for about 50 minutes; cover the topping during the last 10 minutes with foil. May be served warm or cooled.
