Baklava

From , former About.com Guide

Baklava takes a little time and some work, but it's worth it.

Prep Time: 20 minutes

Cook Time: 45 minutes

Total Time: 1 hour, 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound package phyllo (freezer section of grocery store)
  • 2 sticks butter, melted
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped walnuts
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup honey
  • 1/2 of an orange or lemon

Preparation:

Unroll the phyllo on a clean DRY surface, cover with a piece of plastic wrap and a damp towel, remove only what you are working with.

Butter a baking sheet and pull the first sheet of phyllo. Lay it on the butter, butter, fold in half, butter, next sheet, butter, fold, butter, next sheet, etc., until you've got half of the package done. Then, mix the nuts, sugar and spices, spread them evenly across the top of the pastry. I do the next part on the counter, because it's a little easier. Do the other half of the phyllo with the butter, fold, butter, etc., then lay it on top of the nuts and press firmly to set it all together. Using a very sharp knife, cut diagonally through all but the bottom few layers so that you have diamond shaped pieces about 2" long.

Tip: make sure that you butter all the way out to the edges, so that it doesn't dry out.

Bake at 350F for about 30 minutes, then raise the heat to 425F for 15 minutes.

While it's baking, combine 1 cup of water, 1 cup honey and half of either an orange or a lemon in a pan. Bring to a boil. Cook until it will coat the back of a spoon (slightly thickened). Cool.

When it's baked, pull it from the oven and drizzle the syrup over the whole thing, making sure it runs down the cracks. Allow to cool, then cut through the rest of the way. - Mat, forum member
