Storing and Preparing Lettuce

From About.com

I saw on a cooking show that with some lettuces, such as iceberg, tearing the lettuce as opposed to cutting it will help prevent browning around the edges. Also, many years ago I worked for a fast food chain. They kept their lettuce (once cut or torn) in a container of water in the refrigerator. I do it and it seems to extend its life and keep it from drying out. - Submitted by Wendy

I was being lazy one night and did not feel like dragging out the clear wrap to wrap the lettuce head and I did not have a plastic bag to toss it into. So I tossed the lettuce into a large tupperware container, closed the lid and placed it in the refrigerator. It was about a hectic week later I remembered it was there. Would you believe it was still fresh, not one bit brown or nasty. Great way to stretch the lettuce.- Submitted by Diana
