One of my favorites for Halloween costumes is sheet foam. You just cut it out to whatever shape you need and use it as a template for your fabric. Sew up a pocket in your fabric and stuff the foam in. It always looks so professional.
I've done bird wings and tail, headbands with ears, mini-mouse foam covered shoes, Ninja turtle shells, a lady bug shell and butterfly wings. Even a Thomas the Tank engine.
