Your Frugal Tips
From our Readers: Page 11

Here are some frugal tips that other stay-at-home parents have shared with us.

From SANDYBEACH2:
I advise everyone to use the 10% rule, which I use in my house. Simply use 10% less of everything, from detergents to electricity!

Use less laundry and dishwashing detergent, less shampoo and toothpaste, turn down your hot water heater 10% and adjust your thermostate by 10%.

You can even extend the 10% rule to food. Serve smaller portions. Most of us could stand to lose a few pounds, anyway.

Use your imagination! I look forward to seeing everyone's tips!

From Kate:
I use the shopping bags at the grocery store and other stores for sacks in the trash can. Also cut coupons from the paper. Keep the lights turned off in rooms we are not using now. 2 nights a week we will have pot luck (what ever is left over in the refrig)

From Pathfinder:
I don't normally like dark meat on chicken, find it too greasy, but boiling does away with that altogether !

If you do it by bulk, it can be frozen in meal size bunches, or loosely frozen, for single use purposes.

My kids love chiken fried rice, so I also keep some pre-cooked rice in the fridge. I have also been keeping cooked pasta for one dish lunces , suppers or salad.A quick cheese sauce with leftover pasta veggies can pass as an elegant Alfredo !

From Gryphan:
Plant a Garden. I am not sure how much money it really saves. But it sure is a nice release from the day-to-day stresses. It is also very rewarding to enjoy a vegetable (fruit) that you helped to grow.

If you look around you can find some seeds for .10 (USD) a packet and they are usually pretty good. The only problem I had with these .10 packets was the head lettuce I planted turned out to be leaf. But it works just the same.

From Anthony:
Bubble baths are a good way to get the kids into the bath and save you scrubbing, but the commercial ones are an absurd price when you realise they're only generic liquid detergent in a fancy bottle. Solution: buy one bottle of Star Wars Bath Foam (or whatever the TV is plugging that week), and keep it topped up forever with basic washing-up liquid and a few drops of your favourite scent oil.

I want to thank everyone for their tips and hints, and please keep them coming!
