Here are more frugal tips that other stay-at-home parents have shared with us.
From Amy:
I tried EVERYTHING to get the bottom of my tub cleaned. lime away worked for the sides but not the bottom. I tried letting bleach in a couple inches of water overnight, scrubbing with comet, and all kinds of sprays. Finally after reading all the things that baking soda does I put some baking soda in, mixed with a little vinegar and scrubbed. IT'S CLEAN!!!!!!!!!! :)
From SPM:
When traveling overseas, make SURE to spend all your CHANGE, i.e., COINS.. before you go back to the US. Banks will change the bills, i.e, the notes, but unfortunately will NOT change the foreign coins. Hope this is helpful.
From Trish:
I have a family of 4 with one income. I wait and buy meat when it's in the "reduced" section. Our store (Food Lion) cuts meat prices drastically when the "sell by" date is that day or one day away. I have bought family size boneless chicken breast for less than half the sale price. The only difference in the meat I have and the meat others have is they bought it yesterday and I bought it today. The meat is still good. I have also bought hotdogs and ham, cold cuts, etc. for less than half price when they are getting near their "sell by" date.
From Bonny:
When my husband and I had our daughter, we bought the store brand diapers (usually Toys R' US, they seemed the best out of all the store brands) until we had a coupon for Luvs. We found out that they really hold A LOT more than the store brands and I liked them much better than Huggies or Pampers. So, we switched to Luvs. When I sat down and figured it out we actually are saving money because we switched. The store brands couldn't hold much urine so we were changing A LOT of diapers a day. Besides, Luvs only costs about a dollar more than the store brands.
Here is another tip I've heard. Now this might sound really strange but it works. If you breastfeed, you can use your breastmilk to soothe and clear up diaper rash. I found that one in the book "Super Baby Foods". This is a great book with lots of money saving tips, recipes and info.
Well, I hope I helped someone.
Also from Bonny:
I just remembered two more tips.
when I first got the internet, I went to a couple of auction sites to see what kind of deals there are. I was amazed at what I found. I got a brand new Hughes Directv Satellite System with free installation kit (retail value at the time was $150-$200) for $9. YES!! That's it 9 dollars. I found this deal at Ubid.com. Then, I found Ebay. That is the main place that I chop for my 1 year old daughter. I got a brand new with tags Baby Gap skirt that retailed for $48 (that's what the tag said) for $2. I have gotten so many outfits for my daughter that way. I hardly ever go over $5 for anything. It's also a great place to find gifts for cheap. I got my husband an autographed Jerome Bettis football with certificate of authenticity for $50. We had it appraised for $300. Oh, and if you have a baby, you should look at Babygear.com. My husband and I were shopping around town to see who had the Eddie Bauer car seat with the front bar thing for the lowest price. When we got home I got on the web
and found Babygear.com. They have the exact same seat for $20 less than the cheapest we found, AND, they had it in the color we wanted (black). Everyone else only had green. Also, my other tip is this:
When you are burning candles, pour the wax into another jar. That way all you have to do is buy some wicks and you made your own candles buy recycling your used ones.
I want to thank everyone for their tips and hints, and please keep them coming!
